HashKey Secures $30M Investment, Pushing Valuation to $1.5B

HashKey’s Latest Funding Round: A Major Boost

Hong Kong’s licensed crypto exchange, HashKey, has raised $30 million from China-based venture capital firm Gaorong Ventures, solidifying its status as a key player in the global crypto market. The deal values HashKey at an impressive $1.5 billion.

This fresh investment follows HashKey’s successful Series A funding round in January 2024, where it raised nearly $100 million at a valuation of over $1.2 billion. The latest funding shows continued confidence in the exchange’s growth potential and Hong Kong’s expanding role in the crypto industry.

Who Is Gaorong Ventures?

Gaorong Ventures is a private venture capital firm backed by major Chinese tech giants, including Tencent, Alibaba, and Xiaomi. This investment marks Gaorong’s deepening involvement in the cryptocurrency sector as it eyes opportunities in Hong Kong’s regulated crypto market.

HashKey’s Regulated Presence in Hong Kong

HashKey has been a fully licensed exchange in Hong Kong since November 9, 2022. According to the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong, it operates under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Ordinance (AMLO). The exchange received its official virtual asset trading platform license on May 30, 2024, allowing it to offer secure and compliant crypto trading services.

Expanding Crypto Licensing in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has been ramping up its regulatory framework for crypto exchanges. On January 27, 2025, the city granted crypto trading licenses to two more exchanges—PantherTrade and YAX—bringing the total number of licensed platforms to 10 since 2020.

Crypto Venture Funding Sees Recovery

According to Bloomberg and PitchBook data, crypto venture capital investments rebounded in Q4 2024, reaching nearly $10 billion. While this figure is slightly lower than the previous year, it indicates growing institutional interest in the sector despite market volatility.

What This Means for Hong Kong’s Crypto Scene

With HashKey’s latest funding round and the expanding list of licensed exchanges, Hong Kong is positioning itself as a global crypto hub. The city’s clear regulatory framework is attracting institutional investors and fostering innovation in blockchain and digital assets.

HashKey’s $30 million investment from Gaorong Ventures is a strong indicator of confidence in Hong Kong’s crypto ecosystem. As regulatory clarity improves and institutional interest grows, the city could become a leading destination for crypto innovation in Asia and beyond.
